Pray- synching

I entered the living room to find the people excitedly glued to the T.V. They were all eager to view the much-talked about hype called Yaya Dub. I arrived in the middle of one of the clips to see a talented young lady lip-synching well-known songs while making funny facial expressions.

The plot unfolded as the screen was split into two. On the other half was a young handsome man watching the pretty performing comedian –I later learned she had a crush on this young actor– entertaining her audience with her smashing dubs (*I learned later on that smash-dubbing meant creating selfie videos dubbed with famous sounds and songs).

After two or three more clips of Yaya Dub, however, my entertainment threshold got saturated. I felt there was nothing more interestingly exotic about it. I commented to someone that the lip-synching was good, but the entire ‘impromptu script’ was beginning to become rather dull, repetitive and boring.

Someone commented that these two individuals had actually never met in person. This was why millions followed this brief viral snippet on T.V. and in YouTube. People were kilig (literally romantically or emotionally tickled) about how the story would evolve.

Will this young lady’s dream, and the man’s as well, to meet each other and turn their virtual fairy tale into something real?

The next day, as I was in the chapel praying and I don’t know why the Yaya Dub episode flashed back in my mind. I decided to casually share the experience with Jesus.

“Jesus, the other night I saw something called Yaya Dub. Well, it’s almost like now, here, while I am talking to you and You watching-hearing me… At least that’s the way it should be, right?”
[SILENCE…]

“Well, Lord, about the Yaya Dub…I thought it’s pretty much like prayer. I may look like I’m lip-synching also, and I don’t even have an idea of how You look and sound like.”
[SILENCE… …] Still staring at the Tabernacle I scratched my head.

“When will I see Your face, Lord?” I started reciting whatever came to my mind.
[SILENCE… … …]

“Our Father in Heaven… Hallowed be Thy name…,” I then thought of saying random prayers.

Afterwards, I said St. Peter’s humble and loving prayer, “Lord, You know all things, You know that I love You.”
[Again SILENCE!]

“Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me, a sinner!” I said the blind man’s request.
[More SILENCE!!!]

“Lord, remember me, when You enter into Your Kingdom.” My all-time favorite petition.
[And even more SILENCE!!!]

For a second, I realized that I was like lip-synching Scripture. I may not have been making funny faces, but I was really connecting to and with Someone even though I could not see, hear and touch Him!

The very words I repeated, which are really His words (God’s Word), seemed to make His Presence more palpable, but not in the sensible way we are accustomed to.

I thought that God is more than just familiar with His own words in Scripture, because His words live on. And I imagined how He must love to hear us often repeat them to Him in our prayers. He never gets bored or tired of listening to us. In fact, He is more than delighted to see us like children entertaining Him.

“Come to me, all you who are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest….”
[SILENCE]

“Lord, to whom shall we go, You have the words of everlasting life,” I prayed-synching.
The silence was no longer there!
