Mandaue City Hall officials and employees led by Mayor Jonas Cortes were joined yesterday by nongovernment organizations (NGOs), volunteers and other groups in building “bayanihan-style” a multi-purpose hall in barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City.

The hall-building activity is part of the city’s celebration of its 46th Charter Day today.

Students and members of the Lower Tipolo Homeowners Association helped  form a a human chain or bucket brigade that extended 200 meters  where volunteers passed hollow blocks and building materials from one hand to another to the site.

Their target was to complete in one day a multi-purpose solar building, and set a world record.

Some of the materials like the solar-powered light bulbs and solar panels were provided by P-Green Philippines, a local partner of a Japanese technology firm.

Volunteers  also helped the Department of General Services and the Engineering Department build a 120-sq.m. playground next to the  multi-purpose hall.\

Services were offered on site like processing of community tax certificates, medical, dental examinations and consultations and seminars on composting, waste segregation as well as a job fair.

Among the groups who joined the activity were Bing’s Pharmacy, Three-Sixty Pharmacy, Cebu Doctors’ University and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI).

A Mass will be held at the National Shrine of St. Joseph to kick off today’s observance. An awarding ceremony will be held at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex tonight.
