Laborte-Bejasa pair bags Advanced 17-U crown

THE pair of Lyrden Laborte and Carl Bejasa and the girls duo of Eloise Canillo and Zinah Bejasa bagged titles yesterday on the first day of the 2nd Freedom Cup badminton tournament at the Cebu City City Sports Center.

Bejasa and Laborte clobbered Wileyto Yray and Mike Maratas, 21-9, 21-12, to top the Advanced 17-and-under boys category while Canillo and Bejasa routed Shayne Boloron and Daisy Preglo, 21-6, 21-5, in the Advanced 17-under girls division.

Maratas and Yray, however, bounced back and won the Advanced 15-under boys title after turning back Laborte and Carl Canillo, 8-21, 21-17, 21-19.

But the duo failed to see action in the Advanced 13-under final when Maratas suffered severe cramps in his right arm resulting to a default loss to the pair of Allen Penute and Shandy Sigundine.

The tandem of Kim Jacalan and Daisy Oreglo crushed Jerika Uy and Aniea Torres, 21-4, 21-17 in the Advanced girls 15-under class while Bejasa and Rio Karyll took hme the girls 13-under crown after trouncing Loura Lumapguid and Jacalan, 21-11, 21-12. Ylchero and Ross Ramos beat Kurt Cuabo and Gian Arante in three sets, 18-21, 21-14, 21-9 in the boys title match.

The Adult category of the event organized by the White Feathers Badminton Club in cooperation with the Cebu City Sports Commission and Babolat, will commence today at 8:30 a.m. at the same venue. It will feature Levels G, F, and E in mens’ and womens’ doubles.

In the beginners category, Jevo Cabras and Baham Lacerna topped the 17-under boys doubles after beating Reynvie and Niño Rey Patalinghug, 21-9, 21-9, while Kiah Cabrias and Ehna Tolo drubbed Uy and Amanda Qui in the girls category, 21-10, 23-21.

The Aaron Omolon-PJ Barrera pair meanwhile, secured the 13-under boys title nipping the Ramos brothers of Ylchero and Ross, 21-13, 21-19. Elaine Esperanze and Jhoane Tiu scored a, 21-7, 21-10, title win over Hailene Diaz and Naeomi Gulapany in the girls doubles division.

Cuabo then teamed up with Eve Bejasa in beating Zeus Cabras and Lemar Agravante, 21-10, 21-19 in the 10-under final while Alliyah Limosnero and Kristel Bisnar forced the Diaz-Gulapany tandem to land another second place finish in the girls class.
