Motivated by the promise of a dinner treat from their dean, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Lady Panthers blew past the Cebu Doctors University (CDU) Lady Stallions, 25-13, 25-12, 25-20 to grab the last semifinals slot in the CESAFI women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the University of San Carlos (USC) Main Gym.
Before the game started, USPF team captain Valerie Tangeres told her teammates that dean Velos Empuerto will treat them to dinner if they advance into the next round.
“Librehan daw mi niya og larsian kung mudaog mi then if magsunod-sunod daw kay free movie daw ang iya next ilibre,”Tangeres said.
And the extra motivation clearly worked as the Lady Panthers jumped to an 18-7 lead in the opening set highlighted by Tangeres’ spike that pierced the heart of the Lady Stallions’ defense.
Tangeres continued her scoring binge in the second as she exploded for 8 hits in leading her team to a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
It was the same story in the third as USPF never gave the Lady Stallions any chance of making a comeback.
The win pushed the Lady Panthers to next weekend’s semifinals alongside SWU, USJ-R and USC.
Also in the women’s division, the USC Lady Warriors closed their elimination round campaign by crushing the University of Cebu (UC) Lady Webmasters, 25-11, 25-17, 25-14.
Meanwhile in the girls division, last year’s runner up Sacred Heart School-Ateneo De Cebu (SHS-ADC) Magis Eagles manhandled the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 25-7, 25-8.
Also in the girls division, the USJ-R Baby Jaguars sneaked past the UC Baby Webmasters, 25-20, 25-15 while USC overpowered USPF, 25-7, 25-20.
