ENVIRONMENT Secretary Gina Lopez said Cebu City officials should make decisions based “on the common good” in relation to the Inayawan landfill dispute.

Lahat ng decision should be made with the common good in mind. Kung walang pakinabang sa komunidad, then dapat tingnan – kung nagkakasakit ang tao, kung mabaho (All decisions should be made with the common good in mind. If there is no benefit to the community then it should be looked into. If it makes the people sick, if it is foul smelling) then we should investigate that,” she said.

The 17-year-old Inayawan Landfill was reopened last July of this year after the city government complied with some of the requirements set by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

But the Cebu City Hall faced multiple complaints since its reopening due to the foul smell it emanated and the health risks that it posed to businesses operating near it, residents living in the area, as well as the schools located within its vicinity.
