Cebu badminton players grab top places in Ormoc

Cebuano badminton players grabbed a sizeable share of the spotlight in the 2nd Badminton National Tournament held at the spanking Badminton City in Linao, Ormoc City last Nov. 5.

Cebu’s Dexter Opalla and Fritz Sagaad and partners Charles Marigomen and Aljun Penute brought their stirring rivalry to Ormoc City as they battled in the finals of the centerpiece men’s doubles Level C. And the quartet did not disappoint as they extended their championship battle to a third set decider.

This time, the Penute-Marigomen pair reversed the result of their previous duel by outlasting Opalla and Saagad, 14-21, 21-16, 21-18.

In Men’s Level D, Jonil Tiu and Kevin Bergantin of Cebu outplayed Iligan’s Ike Madangan and Christian Sartorio in another nail biting three setter, 24-22, 19-21, 21-13.

Men’s E winners, Roan Maurillo/Kharyl Resma of Iligan defeated Benji Nodalo/Jonel Tapang of Tacloban while Bing Bandoy/Daniel Emcomio won against Paul Bartolini/Lar Kent Corcusia in the Men’s Doubles Level F.

The cassh-rich tournament drew shuttlers from Cebu, Iligan, Barugo, Bato, Baybay, Catbalogan, Calbayog, Hilongos, Hinunangan, Isabel, Maasin, Ormoc, Pasar-Isabel, San Juan and Tacloban.

The delegation from Leyte took the biggest bite at the total cash prize by bringing home P52K with Cebu players bagging P46K and Iligan smashers winning P28K.

In the distaff side, Kim Soon/Charmaine Villa outlasted fellow USJR-Cebu Jaguars Mia Rizon/Chin-Chin Amante in Level D. Iligan’s Barbi Mijares/Kharyl Resma defeated Tacloban’s Tintin Manaog/Nikki Martin in Level E while Shaninah Laboy/Kiah Cabras won against Jhoane Tiu/Elaine Esperanza in Level F.

Ormoc City Mayor Richard L. Gomez, who is a badminton enthusiast and national athlete, graced the event along with city councilor Vince Rama.

The games were held at a standstill for a good 20 minutes as Gomez delivered an impromptu speech, declaring his unwavering support for the development of badminton and other sports in his city.
