CPDRC needs physician for infirmary

The newly designated assistant jail warden of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) said the Provincial Health Office (PHO) is now looking for a physician to man the infirmary inside the facility.

Dr. Gil Macato, who is a Provincial Health Officer III, was recently appointed by Gov. Hilario Davide III as assistant jail warden after Civil Security Unit head Bobby Legaspi filed an indefinite leave of absence. Legaspi last reported on Sept. 28.

But Macato said that being tasked to manage the CPDRC is a big responsibility, thus, the need for another physician to attend to the health needs of the inmates is imperative.

PHO head Dr. Rene Catan said that somebody formerly connected with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Manila wanted to apply for the position.

Catan said that the doctor, who he refused to be named, is qualified for the position because of her experience from previous jobs.

“(The doctor) is expected to join next week. But she will still be interviewed by us,” Catan said.

Aside from hiring another doctor, Catan said they would also rehabilitate the infirmary in the jail.

Catan said Dr. Macato would identify prisoners who will help in the construction works.

“We asked the administration office (at the Capitol) to give the P6 million budget allocation so we could start repairing the clinic. Ang beds naa na pero way foam kinahanglan pa sad siya i-repair (The beds are already there but have no foam mattresses, and we still have to repair them),” Catan said.

He said that with the help of inmates, the provincial government can save on labor costs.

Catan said the repair of the infirmary is scheduled next year, but it can be done earlier depending on the availability of the budget.
