Mandaue to set up MRFs in villages

MANDAUE City will be grouping their 27 barangays into five clusters and will designate a materials recovery facility (MRF) in every cluster in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Act.

Mandaue City Mayor Luigi Quisumbing said only six barangays in Mandaue have MRFs since the others have difficulty acquiring land for these facilities.

The mayor said they are willing to provide the infrastructure, labor, incentives to barangays and finance just to be compliant with the law.

Quisumbing said while they already submitted a closure plan on the Umapad dumpsite as ordered by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), they are also looking into other options.

He said even the 9.2 hectare land in Barangays Mantuyong and Guizo will house an MRF.

While they are still finalizing their landfill facility in Casili, they are prioritizing waste management among households, Quisumbing said.
