The pickup truck segment is one of the most competitive in the country because of a very impressive lineup.
So when Tata Motors decided to pit its Xenon pickup truck against the current batch of workhorses, the segment became even more interesting.
The addition of Xenon in the lineup has made the segment more flexible as those in the hunt for a pickup now have a more affordable option.
But even if it costs lesser than its competitors, the pickup from the Indian automaker doesn’t seem to lack substance. In fact, we believe it has enough characteristics that can make it go toe-to-toe with its rivals.
What we find most impressive is its 2.2-liter DiCOR direct-injection diesel engine that produces 148 horsepower and 320 newtonmeter of torque. For pickup truck afficionados, these numbers are more than enough to get the job done.
When Cebu Daily News took it for a test run in harsh terrain in the outskirts of Consolacion town, northern Cebu, the Xenon performed with flying colors. Aside from the capable engine power, the Xenon’s front torsion bar and rear live-axle suspension setup and rigid chassis sucked up the tough terrain with ease. Its high ride height was also a plus factor as it allowed us to climb over obstacles without sweat.
The highway, though, is not quite the Xenon’s comfort zone. Its ride is a bit on the stiff side and gaining speed may take some time. But once it does gain momentum, the Xenon gets more in control and stabilizes.
The Xenon’s styling may not be one that would really stand out, but its strong lines, wide fenders, and squarish frame may seem suitable for those who want to look different.
There’s nothing also flashy inside save for a touchscreen audio head unit for the 2017 edition. But the interior has everything that’s needed such as power window switches in the center console and compartments for different stuffs.
Although some may say that the Xenon won’t really stand a chance against the current batch of trucks in the market, we must not forget the price difference. (The Xenon starts at P880,000 and its top of the line is just slightly over a million.) Once we consider that, things will look more sensible.
At the end of the day, what’s important is that the Xenon is a well-built truck that gives the market a more affordable option.
