Central Visayas athletes have been feeling a lot of pressure coming into this year’s Private Schools Athletics Association (Prisaa) National Finals in Iba, Zambales. And they have every right to feel so.

As defending overall champions of the annual sports meet, the Bisdaks are aware that everyone is gunning to scalp them in Iba, Zambales.

Yesterday, the Bisdaks finally heaved a sigh of relief after successfully defending the crown they won last year in Koronadal, South Cotabato. And in runaway fashion at that.

CV closed the weeklong meet with 124 golds, 64 silvers and 59 bronze medals for its second consecutive National Prisaa overall title.

A far second was Western Visayas which collected 53 golds, 53 silvers, and 65 bronze medals while Negros Island Region (NIR) finished third with 38 golds, 2 silvers, and 12 bronzes.

CV’s swimmers accounted for most of the region’s harvest with a sizzling 44-15-13 gold-silver-bronze tally while the karatekas chipped in 11 golds, four silvers, and nine bronze medals.

Volleyball

In girls beach volleyball, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation took home the gold by beating NIR via default as the latter decided not to play due to conflict of schedules since they were also competing in indoor volleyball. The move paid golden dividends as NIR snatched the gold by outlasting the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in five intense sets.

Table Tennis

In table tennis, the University of Cebu failed to replicate its feat of sweeping the 16 golds staked in the event due to the injury suffered by Val Jaca but still went home with 15 gilts.

The Webmasters were on their way of duplicating their historic feat last year when they took a 2-0 lead in the men’s singles competition. But an injury to Jaca in the third denied them the gold as Western Visayas won, 3-2.

Despite the loss, Jaca was still named the best player in men’s play while fellow Webmaster Diana Oliverio was picked the best player in the women’s side.

“I’m very satisfied with our performance. It’s okay and I’m happy with the result,” said UC table tennis mentor Jessica Honoridez who was named the best coach in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Basketball

In men’s basketball, reigning Cesafi champions, University of the Visayas Green Lancers snatched the gold with an easy, 74-64 finals win over Western Visayas.
