VISITING boxers from Cagayan de Oro City stamped their class in the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)- Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) Juniors Championships held last Wednesday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Scoring wins for the Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno-backed boxers were Mark Leter Durens , John Vincent Pangga, Regemelyr Namocatcat and Jorge Nuez.
Durens started Cagayan de Oro’s domination by scoring a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) victory over Charles Batiancila of Medellin town, Cebu in the 46-kilogram division.
Pangga followed with a unanimous decision (UD) win over John Loue Cliridad of Sipalay, Negros Occidental in the 50-kg. class.
Also scoring UD wins were Namocatcat, who topped Mike Joshua Tallo of Cebu City in the 52-kg division and Nuez, who defeated Denmar Cardeno of Big Yellow Boxing Club in the 54-kg category.
Fighters from Cebu City also had their share of success as Jefre Jimenez prevailed over fellow Cebuano John Paul Gabunelas in the 46-kg division, John Niño Vega nipped Kenneth dela Peña of General Santos City in the 48-kg class, and Brix Piala won over James Carl Briones in the 50-kg division.
In other fights, General Santos City’s Criz Russo Laurente pulled off a unanimous decision win over Joenel Francisco of Murcia-Negros Occidental in the 48-kg division, while Norlan Petecio forced Gabriel Soque Stone of Cebu City to quit in the first round in their 60-kg bout.
In the girls’ division, Precous Bago of Talisay City, Cebu scored an RSC win over Faith Colin Llamas of Cebu City in the 40-kg division, Tricia Marie Llamas of Cebu City beat Janine Basnillo of Talisay City in the 44.1-46-kg division, while Blessed Hope Bacus of Talisay topped Mary Nicole Llamas of Cebu City in the 48-kg. category.
The one-day event which featured boxers aged 15 to 16 was hosted by ABAP Region 7 Director Lorenzo “Chao” Sy.
ABAP Secretary-General Ed Picson, AIBA tournament supervisor Karina Picson and PH national juniors head coach Ronald Chavez graced the event.
The event was part of ABAP’s preparation for the country’s campaign in the Asian Juniors Boxing Championships, which is scheduled on August in Davao City.
