Female boxers highlight ‘Engkwentro Sa Mandaue’ fight card

Don’t be deceived by their beauty and inherent frailty. Because Casey Morton of Hawaii and Phannaluk Kongsang of Thailand possess dynamite fists that can send any intruding man to sleep.

The two professional boxers meet in a six-round duel that’s sure to add fireworks to tonight’s “Engkwentro Sa Mandaue” card at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

The rare appearance of these femme fatales is made possible by Cagayan de Oro-based boxing promoter Kenneth Rontal with the help of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Supervisor Leon Panoncillo.

“We decided to put up a female boxing match as there are only a few female boxers in the world. And giving these two a chance to fight is like giving them a chance for a shot at a world title,” said Panoncillo in a press conference yesterday at the J Centre Mall.

The 33-year-old Morton is unbeaten in seven fights with four wins and three draws.

“I’m very thankful for this opportunity of fighting here in Cebu. Actually I am very excited to fight here and I hope that I can satisfy the boxing fans here,” said Morton.

The 22-year-old Kongsang, on the other hand, is seeking her first win as a pro after losing her two previous fights. Unlike Morton who saw action only in the US, the Thai has already fought in China and Singapore.

“It’s going to be a good fight; I promise boxing fans that I will do my best to win,” Kongsang said via a translator.

In yesterday’s official weigh-in, Morton weighed 116 pounds while Kongsang came in at 113.7 pounds.

Main event

Meanwhile, the card’s main event will feature former world title challenger Vic Saludar (14-2-0, 9KOs) against Toto Landero (8-1-2, 2KOs) in a 10-round light flyweight clash. Saludar and Landero weighed in at 106 and 105 pounds, respectively.

Froilan Saludar (24-2-1, 15KOs), Vic’s older brother faces Salatiel Amit (10-2-2, 7KOs) for their super flyweight bout. Saludar tipped the scales at 114 pounds while Amit weighed in at 113 pounds.

Undefeated Vince Paras (10-0-0, 9KOs) and Jimboy Haya (10-3-2, 6KOs) both weighed in at 108 pounds for their 10-round bout for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Youth light flyweight title.

Another unbeaten prospect Robert Paradero (13-0-0, 8KOs) weighed 105lbs while his opponent Charlie Malupanque tipped the scales at 108 pounds for their eight-round light flyweight clash in the curtain opener.
