THE Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) will hold its annual fun run and futsal tournaments this August in separate dates and venues.
The fun run which is in line with Cebu Province’s 448th founding anniversary, will be on Aug. 27 at the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds.
The futsal tourney is slated tourney is slated on August 18 to 20 at the Argao Sports Complex.
CPSC Executive Director Atty. Ramil Abing led yesterday’s launching of the two events and announced that for the fun run which is now on its third year, the foreign category will be removed since it drew only one participant last year.
The race will have a 20-kilometer open, 10k open, 5k grassroots, 3k grassroots and 5k Capitol employees categories with around a hundred thousand pesos going to the winners.
“We are happy to announce that there’s no other run scheduled on the same day of our race and because of that plus our bigger prize, we are confident that we can draw more runners,” said Abing. “We are inviting the cities and municipalities covered by our grassroots program and the regular runners to join our race.”
Last year the race only attracted 600 runners because it coincided with the annual University Run of Cebu Doctors’ University. This year’s CDU run is set on August 20 or a week earlier than CPSC’s race.
Both the Saint Mary’s Girls Town and Boys Town in Talisay City and Minglanilla, respectively have already assured to send 200 entries to the footrace as well as the cities and municipalities covered by CPSC’s grassroots sports program.
Registration for the 5k and 3k distances are free while the 20k and 10k fees are pegged at P500 and P300, respectively.
Futsal eyes more entries
Meanwhile, CPSC Commissioner Nimrod Quiñones said they are expecting more teams to compete in the second futsal tournament compared to last year’s 30 squads.
This year’s categories include girls under-18, boys under-15, girls under-15 and mixed under-11.
Quiñones also revealed that aside from having a futsal tournament in Argao, the CPSC will also conduct a free youth coaching course for football in coordination with the Cebu Football Association. This will be under the National Coaching Course (NCC) program of the Philippine Football Federation to develop more football coaches in the countryside.
