Albina eyes better outing in second year with UV
With a season under his belt, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers’ prized find from Dumaguete, Tristan Albina, figures to play a more prominent role in their bid for back-to-back titles in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament.
After a blistering start to his rookie season last year, Albina’s rookie campaign was derailed by an illness that cost him several games. Now stronger, sharper and more inspired with his first child on the way, Albina is looking to forge a superb sophomore season with an emphasis on more consistency.
“I’ve been working very hard, even more so now that the Cesafi is getting closer. I just want to perform consistently on both ends of the floor this season,” said the 21-year old combo guard.
After losing veteran backcourt general Alfred Codilla during the off-season, the Green Lancers have infused their backcourt with even more talents with the likes of former University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Ram Coleen Testa and former University of Cebu guard Gileant Delator.
They will join the likes of Albina and incumbent point man Sheldon Gahi on what is expected to be a loaded backcourt rotation.
Albina says that he has no qualms sharing minutes and ball-handling responsibilities with the new additions. In fact, he is happy to have new teammates to share the perimeter with.
“I’m happy they’re here. They’re very experienced. I’m glad that they’re here especially now that (Alfred) Codilla isn’t here anymore,” Albina said.
With a child on the way, Albina says this is a stirring moment for him, both on and off the floor.
“This is what gives me inspiration every day, and to go hard in every practice. I just really push to give my best,” enthusiastically shared Albina.
Though the Green Lancers are once again pegged to be the overwhelming favorites with a roster that is bringing back reigning MVP Rey Suerte and Mythical Five member Monic Soliva, Albina tempered expectations and would much rather let their play do the talking.

“I can’t really say that we’ll get the title this season. Of course, the other teams would also give their all to be champions. But for sure, we’ll try our very best to win each and every game,” Albina shared.
The new Cesafi season starts Aug. 5.
