PUGS from two of Cebu’s top boxing gyms, ALA Boxing and Omega Boxing, were not part of the list of boxers who were blacklisted by the Games and Amusements Board (Gab) recently.
A total of 70 boxers were blacklisted by GAB’s head office last July 7 for submitting fake CT scan results in their application for professional licenses.
ALA Boxing Gym’s head trainer and matchmaker Edito Villamor said that ALA Boxing Gym is strict when it comes to the safety of their boxers.
“We don’t have boxers in the list because we always submit genuine CT scans [results] because we prioritize our boxers’ safety,” said Villamor.
ALA Boxing Gym is the stable of three-division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Milan “El Metodico” Melindo and WBO International featherweight king Mark Magsayo.
Omega Pro Sports International’s (OPSI) Vice President Jerome Calatrava also cleared Omega Boxing Gym of having boxers involved in the controversy. Calatrava said that out of Omega Boxing Gym’s 16 professional boxers and two amateurs, not a single one of them are on the list.
“Our priority is the boxers’ safety,” said Calatrava.
OPSI is the promoter of Omega Boxing Gym boxers. The most notable Omega Boxing Gym boxers are WBO regional champions Jhack “El Capitan” Tepora and Christian “The Bomb” Araneta.
GAB chairman Abraham Mitra already announced that those blacklisted boxers are prohibited from applying and renewing their boxing licences.
