Dialogue between govt’, rebels should continue, Palma says

The government should continue to dialogue with the communist rebels to achieve lasting peace, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma said.

“The president might have known of the circumstances and feedbacks and I feel sad about the (President’s declaration) but I hope that dialogue is still possible,” Palma said.

Palma said his previous assignments in Samar and Iloilo provinces enabled him to understand why many people went to the mountains to join the communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.

He said injustice and poverty remain rampant and those who join the communist rebels feel isolated and abandoned by the government. Palma said he prays that the fighting stops and both government and communist rebels can dialogue again.
