CCPO vows to intensify illegal gambling campaign
WITH the Philippine National Police Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa’s 15-day ultimatum to police officers to show gains in the war against illegal gambling, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will double its efforts to go after illegal gamblers.
Chief Insp. Ramoncelio Sawan, public information officer of the CCPO, said that they were not worried about the ultimatum since they had gone after illegal gamblers even before the PNP chief issued the warning.
Sawan cited the increase in apprehension of illegal gambling suspects from January 17 to July 17 this year where 1,371 suspects were arrested as compared to only 440 suspects in the same period last year.
The suspects were mostly arrested when the CCPO, under the the current police chief Senior Supt. Joel Doria, implemented the one-time, big-time operation called Oplan Pokemon, which involved the simultaneous operations in Cebu City against illegal drugs and illegal gambling.
The operation was so successful that the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas patterned a similar operation for the region.
He also cited an increase of the cases filed against these suspects to 410 this year as compared to only 229 last year.
