THE WINNING streak of 2013 Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association’s (Cepca) grand champion Jimmy Ty, Jr. continues as the Tacloban City-native broke the ice of the Cepca Monthly Qualifying Tournament 2014 for January by winning the title over the weekend at the Handuraw Pizza along Gorordo Avenue in Lahug, Cebu City.
Ty, who was crowned king in Cepca’s Tournament of Champions last year, ruled the 5-round Swiss System tournament after scoring a total of 4.5 points.
Ty’s victory earned him the right to defend his overall title in this year’s tournament of champions set in December.
Ty stringed together four consecutive victories in the first four rounds, before settling for a draw in his final match to grab the January title.
Meanwhile, the 2nd VMA-Power Open Chess Valentines Edition tournament has been set this Feb. 8 and 9 at the Colonnade Mall in Colon Street.
Registration fee is P200. For inquiries, call or text Marvin Ruelan at 0926-735-2951. /Correspondent Jade S. Violeta
