Reigning girls champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) hope to live another day and keep their title-retention bid alive when they take on the dangerous University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) this afternoon in the F2 Logistics Cesafi girls volleyball tournament at the USPF covered Court.
SHS-AdC is currently in fourth place with a 3-3 (win-loss) card and must win against the Baby Panthers to clinch a playoff berth for the last semifinal spot.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) 6-0, USPF 5-1, and the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma 5-2 are already in the Final Four.
A loss by the Magis Eagles would eliminate them from playoff contention and allow the University of Cebu who sports a 3-4 slate to advance to the next round since the Baby Webmasters are holding a one-point advantage against the former in the quotient system.
Coming off from a lesson-laced loss to USJ-R last Sunday, Magis Eagles mentor Mario Sala believes that they have a decent chance of pulling off a victory against the Baby Panthers if they can show the same effort they displayed in that game.
Even though they are already assured of a playoffs spot, USPF girls mentor Yolanda Rizarri is not looking to take this game for granted as she looks to instill that killer instinct to her players which is the glaring difference between mediocrity and greatness.
“Our focus as of now is the conditioning of the players. Hopefully, during the games, they will be able to show the different plays we have been practicing since summer,”
Also in girls action, the University of San Carlos (USC) will go up against the Cebu Eastern College while USJ-R hopes to close out their elimination round campaign with a bang, as it battles the Cebu Doctors University (CDU)
In the collegiate men’s division, USC hopes to avoid elimination when it takes on SWU-Phinma while the University of the Visayas guns for a semis ticket when it collides with the defending champions USJ-R.
In women’s action, UC goes up against CDU while USPF eyes for its fourth win in as many games as they lock horns with USC.
