‘Pretty Boy’ hands ‘The Mexican’ first loss
Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas stunned the crowd at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, when he scored a sixth-round technical knockout (TKO) win against the erstwhile unbeaten Jamie “The Mexican” Conlan to retain his International Boxing Federation (IBF) world superflyweight title yesterday.
The 25-year-old Ancajas extended his winning streak to 15 and improved his record to 28 wins (19 knockouts), one loss and one draw.
Conlan suffered his first defeat in 20 fights.
Despite being the defending champion, Ancajas came in as the underdog since he was facing an unbeaten boxer who was fighting on home soil.
But Ancajas proved everyone wrong when he put on a clinic that left Conlan badly beaten. He knocked down Conlan four times in six rounds.
Conlan was floored in the opening round via a body shot but continued to fight. In the second round, Conlan suffered a cut above his left eye. He got knocked down in the third and fourth rounds again. In the sixth round, referee Steve Gray had enough watching Conlan get beaten after the latter got knocked down for the fourth time.
Gray stopped the bout, awarding a TKO victory to Ancajas, a native of Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
It was Ancajas’ third successful title defense after winning the title against McJoe Arroyo last year.
