The October earthquake and the late “Titang Diola”, who danced the Sinulog until  her 80s were the subject matter of the first prize winners of the 2014 Sinulog Film Festival.

Independent film maker Remton Zuasola bagged most of the major awards in the short film category with his entry “Aftershock”.

The entry was awarded Best Short Film, Best Direction and Best Story and Best in Production Design.

“This film is basically about my friends’ experiences in last year’s earthquake,” said Zuasola.

He said the entry was dear to his heart and recalled that during one shooting, the main character Matt Daclan, was moved to tears prompting the director to weep as well. Daclan was also declared Best Actor for the entry.

“The film community in Cebu is small. We are all friends so I would still be happy whoever wins,” said Zuasola.

In second place was Padulong sa Pinuy-anan by Fedwilyn Villarba. Fraz Arrogante’s “Kaubang” won third place.

Award ceremonies for best films and photography were held last night at the SM City Theater.

In the video documentary category, Aldo Banaynal’s “The Keeper” about  the late  Estelita “Nang Titang” Diola  won as Best Video Documentary.

“Nang Titang” Diola, 85,  passed away last year. Until her death, she continued to dance the Sinulog and was considered the “heritage keeper” of the original dance steps and drum beat of the dance-offering to the Sto. Niño she had been taught as child by her father.

Banaynal’s video documentary also bagged the Best story, Best direction and Best packaging.

Second place winner was Badayos’ entry “Sagbayan”.  Third place winner was Noel Samon’s filem “Awit Halad ko Kanimo”

Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of the Sinulog Foundation, said he was impressed by the 2014 harvest and happy to see more young participants.

“I am happy that this year, it raised its standards,” said Ballesteros, adding that the foundation can suggest increasing the P50,000 cash prize for first place to encourage more film makers to join.

In the Sinulog photo contest, Vincent Gallarde won first place  followed by Teddy Uy in second place and Reneir Figuracion in third place.
