GM sevillano tops Pyroworks chess

RENOWNED Cebuano Grand Master (GM) Enrico Sevillano walked away with the whopping P10,000 purse after dominating the Pyroworks Handicapping Open Chess Tournament at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu last Saturday.

The US-based Sevillano scored 6.5 points in seven rounds to walk away with the title of the Swiss system format competition.

Sevillano, 50, defeated 43rd seed Kevin Codinera in the opening round, National Master (NM) Leonardo Alidano in the second round, Carlos Moreno III in the third, Diego Abraham Caparino in the fourth, Rommel Ganzon in the fifth, and NM Merben Roque in the sixth round.

Only International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap managed to draw Sevillano in the seventh round.

IM Yap and Ganzon finished with 6.0 points apiece but the latter was declared the second placer for having a bigger tiebreak score. IM Yap was declared the third placer.
