Arnis may be used to develop a new martial art in Korea
FOLLOWING a demonstration in Korea last year, the Filipino martial art of arnis may be used to develop a new martial art that also includes taekwondo.
Arnis became a hit in South Korea after Supreme Grandmaster (SGM) Dionisio Cañete and Master Harry Talledo led a seminar and combat demonstration on November 23-28, 2017.
They conducted several seminars in Seoul and Busan and drew a lot of interests from Korean martial arts practitioners.
SGM Cañete was also invited to give a special demonstration at the Korean Congress upon Invitation of Lee Dong Sup, who is also the president of World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).
The demonstration covered various knife fighting techniques including disarming, locks and takedowns, defense versus multiple attackers, and other forms of techniques that can only be seen in arnis. They also performed stick and open hand technique that impressed the chairman and taekwondo coaches in attendance.
According to a press release from Gerald Cañete, son of SGM Cañete, the Korean taekwondo coaches said they are open to adapting and incorporating arnis into their newly developed martial art.
The chief instructor of Taekwondo Defense (TKDD) is expected to visit Cebu in April through the invitation of SGM Cañete to train and observe arnis at the Doce Pares headquarters in Santo Niño Village in Cebu City.
