XTERRA Danao
Defending champions Bradley Weiss of Australia and Carina Wasle of Austria will be leading the cast of professional triathletes in this afternoon’s “Meet the Pros” of the XTERRA Off-Road Triathlon Asia-Pacific Championship at the Coco Palms Beach Resort in Danao City.
“I am incredibly excited to be returning to XTERRA Danao this year as the defending champion,” said Weiss, who banked on his superb mountain-biking skills in fire roads and rocky terrain to beat New Zealand’s Sam Osborne by almost seven minutes.
Like Weiss, Wasle is also looking forward to tomorrow’s race.
“XTERRA Danao is one of my favorite races and I’m very happy to return and I hope I can defend my title,” said Wasle, who beat the field by almost 30 minutes last year in ending a pair of heartbreakers on XTERRA Philippines.
Princess Galura, the general manager of the Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI) and the organizer of the race, explained that they have shortened the bike and run course because they wanted a lot of racers to finish this year.
According to Galura, the course last year was very technical and challenging because they were banking on Danao being the “mountainbike capital of the Philippines.”
However, the feedback was that the level of difficulty was too much. So this year, Galura said they made sure to make changes based on the feedback.
With the course now shorter and easier to navigate, SEI is urging enthusiasts to register for tomorrow’s gruelling race with the registration still open until early today. Also, it is an Asia Pacific Championship edition and it may not happen again, said Galura.
Aside from the full Xterra (individual and relay), another category is the Lite (individual and relay), a 750m swim-14km mountain bike-4km trail run.
This is also the only XTERRA that also holds a duathlon (individual), a 2km trail run-14km mountain bike-4km trail run event.
The race is presented by the Cebu province and Danao City with the support of Coco Palms Beach Resort, CTU, 2Go Express, David’s Salon, Intercare, Motor Ace, Hyper on Cignal, The Philippine Star, AlcoPlus, DeVant, Sanicare and Storck.
