Future teachers inspired to become creative writers

University of Cebu Literary Writeshop participants with workshop facilitator Gianne Rensen V. Antonio, keynote speaker Haidee Palapar and guest critics Dr. Haydee Gabriel, Rucelio Vilar and Eugene Ramirez.

The University of Cebu – Main Campus Creative Writing Class of Prof. Gianne Rensen V. Antonio held a literary “writeshop” themed “Writing is Teaching” last March 16 at the AB AVR of the UC-Main Campus in Cebu City.

Writer-educator Haidee Palapar, in her keynote speech, showed samples of her written works and inspired the participants to try a career in writing and publishing when they become teachers in the future. The theme was also strengthened by the inputs of the critics composed of seasoned teachers and literature connoisseurs from various universities. Dr. Haydee Caballes-Gabriel, Rucelio Vilar, and Eugene Ramirez praised the eighteen Education-English majors who presented their original works in poetry, fiction, drama, essay and creative nonfiction and who signified their interest to become teacher-writers in the future.

As the workshop facilitator, Prof. Antonio reminded the participants to heighten their passion in the teaching profession and at the same time hone their creative writing craft. He stressed, “Since you have a moral obligation to help transform this nation of viewers into a society of intelligent readers, start from yourselves first. A prolific writer is a voracious reader. A brilliant teacher is both.” /PR
