MILITANT groups will stage a protest rally on Saturday in support of the bid of unseated Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno for the high tribunal to reconsider her ouster.

The protest rally, organized by the Cebu Citizens’ Assembly (CCA) and Movement Against Tyranny-Cebu(MAT-C), will also call for the upholding of judicial independence and democratic processes in the country.

The rally along Cebu City’s main thoroughfares, which will begin at 8 a.m., will also include those from the Kilusan Para sa Demokrasya-Cebu, Youth Act Now Against Tyranny, Akbayan Party and the Anti-Bongbong Coalition.

“To stand for CJ Sereno is a decisive stand to defend for judicial independence and a stand to uphold our democracy against the tyrannical rule of Duterte administration,” said a statement released yesterday by CCA and MAT-C.

Emalyn Aliviano of Kilusan Para sa Demokrasya, in the same statement, said: “This is no longer (a) creeping tyranny in our land but tyranny upon us, and it will if we allow it. So as people, we should stand by all those who stand for democracy and justice and we should break the silence and break fear to achieve genuine accountable democratic and sovereign country.”

The SC, voting 8-6 on May 11, ousted Sereno by granting the quo warranto petition filed against her by Solicitor General Jose Calida, making her the first constitutional officer who was removed not by impeachment.Calida’s petition primarily argued that Sereno’s alleged failure to submit her statements of liabilities, assets and net worth casted doubt on her integrity to lead the judiciary. /STC INTERN JAIVE AGBON
