Bantayan goes out with a bang; San Francisco, Lacion make North Division Finals

By: Ray Charlie Diaz June 28,2018 - 09:55 PM

PLAYING with nothing to lose, Bantayan finally nailed a victory in the North Division semifinal round of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Basketball Tournament 2018, winning over Medellin, 89-85, in overtime last night at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.

Romeo Sumbi Jr. had 24 points while John Ray Caracena added 23 to carry Bantayan to the victory.

“I am really thankful to my players for finally making a change in the way they play after the talk we had yesterday,” Bantayan head coach Rosel Lingo told Cebu Daily News. “I challenged them to show their talents here in the city.”

Medellin was led by Gelmart Umpad’s 18 and Riel Veloso’s 17 points.

Both teams ended their semis campaigns with identical 1-2 (win-loss) cards and will be eliminated from the tournament.

North finalists

San Francisco (2-0) and Consolacion (1-1), who were facing each other as of press time, will advance to the North Division Finals.

Even if Consolacion loses and drops to the same 1-2 record with Medellin and Bantayan, it will still take the second seat of the finals owing to its superior quotient of +16, according to a tournament official.

Talisay and Sibonga are the finalists in the South Division. The winners in the North and South finals will then vie for the overall championship.
