Despite the outbreak of leptospirosis in Metro Manila, Provincial Health Office (PHO) assured the public that there is no epidemic in Cebu province.

Provincial Epidemiological Surveillance Officer Cyril Kay Pangatungan of PHO said they only recorded one person from Minglanilla who acquired the bacterial, water-borne disease last March.

Pangatungan said leptospirosis can be acquired by exposure to flood water that is contaminated by the urine of infected animals such as rats.

The Department of Health (DOH) has declared leptospirosis outbreaks in several barangays in seven cities of Metro Manila last Thursday.
