By: Inquirer.net July 28,2018 - 08:35 PM

THE United Nations (UN) has welcomed the signing into law of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), which it said is a “landmark achievement” in the Mindanao region.

The UN’s statement was issued on Friday following President Rodrigo Duterte’s recent signing of the BOL that replaced the previously prevailing Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

“The Secretary-General welcomes the signing into law of the Organic Law for Bangsamoro in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao on 26 July, a landmark achievement on the road to lasting peace in southern Philippines,” the UN said in a statement.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also congratulated the peace negotiators from the government, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, bicameral conference committee, and transition commission.

“The United Nations will continue to support the Philippines in the implementation of the law,” the UN assured in its statement.

“[It will also] help build the capacity of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority as an effective conduit for peace, democratic governance and human rights,” it further said.
