A scion of the Cebuano side of the Duterte family will challenge the decades-long reign of the Durano clan in Cebu’s fifth district.

Andrei “Red” Duterte, who claims to be a nephew of the president, filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) as provincial board member during the last day of the filing on Wednesday.

Duterte said the need to to make a change in the fifth district had prompted him to make this run.

“It’s the perfect time. Labi na nga (Especially now that) our president, my uncle, his advocacy is very strong against drugs and corruption and I feel like dako kaayo kog matabang (I could be a big help),” said the young Duterte.

“I want nga as a board member, moabot gyod sa fifth district ang iyang advocacy (that his advocacy would reach the fifth district). That’s why I ran,” he added.

Asked if his name would give him an advantage, Duterte said, “I believe so. Advantage gyod siya kay sa Pilipinas, basta politics, mo-matter man gyod ang apilyedo (It is an advantage in the Philippines. If it in politics, the family name would matter).”

Aside from fighting illegal drugs and corruption, Duterte said he would also push for strengthening basic education curriculum through math and science.

Duterte and his tandem Michael Joseph Villamor will be facing incumbent board member Miguel Antonio Magpale, son of Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and Rosemarie Durano-Sybico.

Duterte is running under the 1-Cebu PDP-Laban.
