TOP-SEED Rommel Ganzon clinched the title of the National Master (NM) Roger Abella Memorial Open Chess tournament last Saturday at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Ganzon had to rely on his accumulated tie-break score to escape with the title.

He and second-seed National Master (NM) Edsel Montoya both finished with 6.5 points after seven rounds.

Since the tournament followed the Swiss system, the Buchholz system was used and Ganzon had a higher cumulative point over Montoya to become the champion of the tournament, which was participated by around a hundred wood pushers.

Ganzon walked away with the P7,000 purse while Montoya received P5,000. Joel Pacuribot rounded off the top three in the tournament with 6.0 points.

The tournament was organized by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association and sponsored by the Cebu City Sports Commission.
