UV to face Naga College Foundation in PCCL Regional Championships

THE THREE-TIME defending Cesafi champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers survived poor outside shooting and the fouling out of reigning MVP Rey Anthony Suerte and came away with a 82-78 win over the Colegio de Sta. Ana-Victorias to make their way to the Philippine Regional Championships of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League President’s Cup on Wednesday afternoon at the Arcadia Active Lifestyle Center.

With Suerte, who is playing his final year with UV, battling foul trouble all-game long before fouling out mere seconds into the final canto, UV dug deep and got some crucial buckets from wily guard Gileant Delator to nab the win and advance to the next round.

Up next for the Green Lancers will be the Luzon-NCR Regional champion, the Naga College Foundation Tigers.

Game 1 of the best-of-three series will be played today at 4 p.m. The winner of this series will advance to the national collegiate championship.

“Going up against NCF is a tough battle. They have two imports in their lineup and so, we must hit our three-point attempts unlike today’s game where we managed just one. It was a very poor performance from the outside,” said UV’s fiery head coach Gary Cortes after the match that was witnessed by a jam-packed crowd of Davaoeños.

He also rued the fouling out of Suerte, who he shared already had three fouls in the first half.

“Early in the third, he got his fourth foul. Then, seconds into the fourth, he got his fifth. Graduate na, so this year, ikaduha sya ni graduate,” added Cortes with a laugh.
