Google Play names 2018’s best apps, games, movies, TV shows

We’re now in the final stretch of 2018 and that means it’s time to start celebrating the best (and trying to forget the worst) of everything that happened over the past 12 months.

Early this month, Google got into the awards spirit by naming Google Play’s “Best of 2018.”

The big winner on the app front is Drops — a ridiculously well-received (4.7 out of 5 on the Play Store) language-learning app series which can teach you up to 31 new languages using simple visuals and fun mini-games.

On the mobile game front, meanwhile, everyone’s favorite battle-royale-game-that-isn’t-Fortnite took home the chicken dinners. If you don’t know what PUBG Mobile is all about, check out our review and these tips for beginners.

2018 is also the first year Google has let users vote for their favorite app, game, and movie for a new “Fan Favorite” category.

For the U.S. vote, PUBG Mobile again took the spoils for the game category, while the inaugural winners for apps and movies were YouTube TV and Avengers: Infinity War, respectively.

Marvel and Disney’s crossover smash hit also featured on the overall top five movies list, but lost out on the top spot to Black Panther. Marvel heroes also grabbed third and fifth place (Thor: Ragnarok and Deadpool 2), while Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took fourth.

Other notable winners include The Walking Dead as the top TV show (which is inexplicably wrong), Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury for the first place ebook, and the 12 Rules of Life audiobook by Jordan B. Peterson — a right-wing clinical psychologist with some, let’s say somewhat questionable, views on social issues.
