Earth Hour 2019: 5 ways to celebrate the movement at home

What does it mean to be a millennial in this technological world? Beyond social media, it has become a harder to keep in touch with the environment. That’s why several environmental initiatives have been created to gather people, especially the youth, in a dialogue to raise awareness.

One of the biggest events that has created a mark globally is Earth Hour, which started way back by in Sydney, Australia. It was Initiated by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in efforts to make a massive action towards climate change, since then, it has grown to engage more audience and participants.

Every year, millions of people in all walks of life set aside an hour to support earth hour by joining community events and switching off their lights, while some, opt to celebrate it at home with their family and friends.

Earth Hour is a symbolic movement to get people to unite, ponder about planet Earth and execute simple energy-conserving acts – but it’s not only about an hour of in the dark, it’s also about celebrating life in its very sense.

Earth can be as fun as it is good for the planet, and if you’re searching for entertaining ways to celebrate it with your family and friends, here are 5 energy-friendly ways to do it at home.

1.) Have a conversation by the fire – There’s nothing more enjoyable than bringing camp-style activities at home. If you have a backyard, light up a bonfire, ignite a conversation with your family and friends, jam to the strums of a guitar and sing to songs you mutually enjoy, and feast on some childhood s’mores.

2.) Candle-lit dinner – An hour in the dark can be as rewarding as a sumptuous meal eaten with the people close to your heart in an intimate candle-lit dinner. If you prefer to invite more people, an interesting way to do it is holding a potluck and inviting more guests under the dim light of candles.

3.) Play board games – Gather your family and engage in an old-fashioned quality time by playing board games such as UNO, scrabble and jenga. It’s the perfect time to bring back the times when fun didn’t have to involve any electronic gadgets and internet.

4.) Go stargazing – If the skies are clear, perhaps the simplest way to celebrate Earth Hour is to lay on the ground with your family and friends on a mat or a makeshift hammock. It’s also the perfect time to grab your telescope if you have one at home and look at the constellations.

5.) Make a commitment to Earth – Earth Hour wouldn’t be as meaningful if you don’t take it as a chance to make a pact with the environment. Come up with resolutions to reduce your own carbon footprint everyday. Earth Hour only lasts for an hour but climate change lasts a lifetime.

As Earth Hour can be celebrated in many ways, in the community, or in the comforts your own home, you can also make it to a point to celebrate it within yourself – not only for an hour but a for a lifetime.
