The University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) proved its recent ascension as kings of the Milo Little Olympics Regional Finals was no fluke, after the Warriors annexed the elementary and secondary crowns of the 2013 Cebu City Olympics with only the chess event left to be competed.
The multi-sports meet which will select the city’s delegates to the CVIRAA meet, was hounded by numerous problems and postponements due to natural calamities that pounded Cebu in recent weeks including the 7.2-magnitude earthquake last Oct. 15 and last week’s supertyphoon ‘Yolanda’ touted as the strongest typhoon to hit the world.
Just like the Milo Regionals, the Warriors claimed their first ever high school crown in the city-wide games by dethroning perennial champion University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters.
USC accumulated a total of 268 points to rule the secondary competition while its elementary team retained its overall title with 267.6 points.
“We are very happy and thankful to God that we finished the games successfully despite the problems we encountered. It was a very big challenge for us in the organizing committee and for DepEd to successfully hurdle those challenges and produce Cebu City’s best athletes for the CVIRAA,” said DepEd Cebu City Division Sports Coordinator Zenaida Gocotano.

Meanwhile the second and third spots in both the secondary and elementary divisions are still being fiercely fought as of press time with the chess event still left to be contested after it was postponed last Monday when a 4.2 magnitude earthquake rocked Cebu.
Chess is being held at the Cebu City Division office.
Abellana National School (ANS) or Unit 9 is currently in second place in the secondary division with 205.6 points followed closely by defending champion UC at third with 203 points.
UC could still salvage second overall if it finishes first or second in chess which awards 30 points to the champion and 10 points for second. ANS is just 2.6 points ahead of UC.
Four more rounds will still be played today in the seven-round event.
In the elementary division, Unit I is a far second to USC with 116.1 points followed by Unit Four with 110.5 points.
Meanwhile, North District VI will represent Cebu City in lawn tennis in the CVIRAA this February here in Cebu City.
Bright Academy’s Jana Marie Pages, Zethley Mae Alferez and Shane Villareal will banner the city’s secondary girls team while USC-BED’s Jon Godfrey Seno and the doubles tandem of Jermaine Laurel and Christopher Encarnacion will head the boys squad.
Representing the city in the elementary division are Regina Nelsa Igoy of North District VI for girls singles and Cristella Marie Sampan and Ghislain Bohol for doubles while North District III’s Marc Nicole Suson will compete in boys singles with Vinz Lominaquie and Iggy Pantino suiting up in boys doubles.
Representing the city in basketball are the University of the Visayas (UV) for boys secondary division, Apas High School for secondary girls and USC-BED for elementary boys. ANS will represent the city in high school baseball and Punta Princesa Elementary School in the elementary division. Maria Montessori International School and Saint Theresa’s College (STC) will compete in secondary futsal.
The Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves swept the football titles yesterday after beating PAREF Springdale, 4-2 (penalty shootout) in the secondary division and Camp Lapu-lapu Elementary School, 3-1 in the elementary division.
