CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Public Library’s (CCPL) new concept of a library space fit for the new generation readers will be pushed to all the barangays in the city.
According to Rosario Chua, the chief librarian of CCPL, the Anita’s Garden, which is a garden-library concept for a used space, would soon reach the barangays to bring the library closer to the residents.
Cebu City Councilor Margarita “Margot” Osmeña during her speech for the centennial anniversary kick-off of the CCPL on Monday, April 8, said that each barangay must have a 24/7 library because of the CCPL could no longer hold the number of people wanting to avail of the space.

Chua said the CCPL had already coordinated with the barangays, and the city government through the council’s committee on education and scholarships to establish an Anita’s Garden in day care centers in the barangay halls.
She said that the barangays would be tasked to fund and maintain these Anita’s Gardens.
Osmeña said that Anita’s Garden is a good concept but the CCPL should try to look for pilot areas first before launching these libraries in all the barangays.
“They should pick some areas first so they can test on how these libraries will work on these barangays,” said Osmeña.
Chua said that they had been working with the barangays since 2008, and they hoped the barangays would support the project of the CCPL.
She revealed that expansion would be needed for the CCPL since there had been over 800 people going to the library everyday.

“We can no longer accommodate all clients,” said Chua.
Osmeña said that eventually most of the Rizal Public Library and Museum would soon be transformed into an extension of the library but not all rooms of the buildings would be used by the library.

“Maybe we can use some areas in some seasons like during the board examinations. Then on other times, we can use it for something else,” said Osmeña.
The renovation of the third floor of the building continues so it can be used as an extension of the library. /dbs
