Basketball with a twist in Pinamungajan, Cebu
Cebu City, Philippines— A unique kind of basketball tournament is being organized in Pinamungajan town, southwestern Cebu, the home of PBA superstar and 5-time MVP June Mar Fajardo.
It’s one which requires players to wear a different set of uniforms.
In Purok Piña, barangay Mangot, the Sangguniang Kabataan thought of giving the game of basketball a unique twist to help raise funds for their annual fiesta celebration in honor of Señor San Roque on May 11, 2019.
In the ongoing tournament, players are asked to dress in lady outfits, like skirts and dresses, while playing.
The tournament started May 5, 2019.
Charise Managaytay, SK chairperson of Pinamungajan, said that this tournament was conceptualized through the initiative of both SK council and purok’s youth members.
“Since the time of our parents, the purok has been active in community involvement, like the usual filipino culture we celebrate, from novena, mass on the feast day and series of fun activities until the feast day. As for this year, the SK has been going through a lot of reforms that hinders the council from supporting such event financially. And because the purok doesn’t see that as barrier, they thought of ways on how to make their activities possible. One of the activities they organized is basketball, however the players need to wear skirts and any female outfits, just to bring light and happy atmosphere to the community,” she said.
Six teams have registered in the tournament. These are Cutiepie, Powerpuff girls, Team Fresh, Gandara, Dalagang Pilipina, and Embo.
Each team is composed of players who are carpenters, motorcycle-for-hire drivers, the youth and residents from the town.
Will we see the next June Mar Fajardo in this tournament? If so, we wonder what his outfit is. /bmjo
