CEBU CITY, Philippines — A mother and daughter, who considered themselves as manga otaku or manga geeks, have opened a reading hub for manga fanatics in Cebu.

Erica Shibamura, 63, a retired chief executive officer of a firm in the tourism industry, and her daughter, Tomomi Shibamura, 39, set up the manga reading hub in a corner of Gaisano Country Mall and called it MangaHolic’s Reading Lounge.

Erica, who is half Cebuano and half Japanese, said that she and her daughter had been manga and anime fanatics themselves and so it was easy to decide on opening the reading hub.

“The idea came from my daughter,  Tomomi Shibamura who is now 39 years old. She says she’s a certified Manga Otaku (Manga geek)” she said.

Erica said she started reading anime and Manga since the 1960s and, her daughter, Tomomi had been reading the comics since her elementary years.

She said the reading hub would be a paradise for manga fanatics since they had complete sets or volumes of manga comics that these manga fanatics could not probably have because of the hefty price tags on them at bookstores.

She also said that the manga reading hub would be different from other reading hubs which had incorporated reading with cafes, which MangaHolics Reading Lounge had not done.

The reading lounge opens from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

However, manga readers will have to shell out a P100 for an hour of using the reading hub. | dbs
