Girl with leukemia from San Fernando pleads for help

By: PR March 11,2020 - 06:24 PM

A six-year-old girl from Barangay Basak, San Fernando, Cebu sincerely pleads for financial help to sustain her ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

Lovely Mansenades was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) last July 31, 2019. She was five years old that time. One month before her diagnosis, disturbing symptoms like easy fatigability, recurring fever, body weakness, and unusual paleness caused Lovely’s parents to bring her to a hospital in Carcar City. After initial assessment, she was then referred to a hospital in Cebu City for further medical interventions. A complete blood count was done and it showed low hemoglobin, low platelet, and high white blood cell count. She was then given multiple blood transfusions. A bone marrow aspiration was also performed and the result revealed the finding consistent with her diagnosis. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood which is characterized by the bone marrow producing too many immature lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. ALL is also the most common type of cancer in children. With prompt treatment, this disease has a high cure rate which means that the possibility of survival is very high among children. Treatment typically includes intensive chemotherapy and frequent laboratory workups.

Lovely’s first dose of chemotherapy was administered last January 8, 2020. Her attending hematologist-oncologist prescribed a treatment protocol that will last for three years to attain complete healing. She is currently on induction phase which is the first phase of her chemotherapeutic regimen.

Lovely is the eldest of the two children in the family. Even in her young age, she has a kind and compassionate heart. She fervently desires to become a nurse someday in order to give care to sick people. She also loves to dance. Her father who works as a driver helper and cement piler is the sole breadwinner of the family. He has a daily income that ranges from P350 to P500 per day. Her mother is a homemaker who takes good care of their children. Their family is economically challenged because of the high cost of Lovely’s ongoing chemotherapy. Their financial resources are already depleted and not enough to meet the needs of the family and Lovely’s medical expenses. Thus her parents are pleading for financial help from generous individuals to help save the life of their little angel.
