The Cebu provincial government yesterday kicked off its first Aqua-Marine Trade Fair and Exhibit featuring various marine products from the towns.
Ten municipalities and four local businesses set up booths in front of the BAEX Building selling products like bottled sea urchin, dried squid, dried fish, oysters, ‘dilis,’ seaweed extract and even popular street food like squid ball, fish ball and tempura.
Tables and chairs made from sea shells are also on display.
Gisel Masong, who has been selling fish from the Bantayan Island at the Taboan Market for eight years now, said the products sold at the fair are cheaper than the public market.
“Maka-menos ka og P5 hangtod P50 kung mopalit ka diri,” she said. (It’s cheaper here by P5 to P50.)
The trade fair and exhibit is part of the Anti-Illegal Fishing Consciousness Week and Month of the Ocean. The trade fair will run from May 26 to 30.
The celebration carries the theme “Kadagatan alimahan, paglaum sa kabataan.” (Taking care of the sea, hope of the youth.) It aims to educate people against illegal fishing.
At yesterday’s opening program, Gov. Hilario Davide III, said the showcase is important to maintain and protect the sea.
