MANDAUE CITY, Cebu – To mitigate flooding especially when there is a heavy downpour, Cebu City’s Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) conducted massive declogging of canals, culverts, and sewers in the different barangays last week.

Declogging operations were made in Barangays Day-as, Pulangbato, Punta Princesa, Day-as, Basak San Nicolas, Cogon Ramos, Sambag 1, Pit-os, Inayawan, Sto. Niño, Mambaling, Pardo, Guadalupe, and along Osmeña Boulevard, Mayor Edgardo Labella said in a social media post.

DEPW personnel collected mostly plastic bottles from the canals and culverts.

“Over a period of several days, they were able to collect hundreds of sacks of garbage that were clogging our drainage system,” Labella said.

The city’s massive declogging operation is part of its flood control measures, which Labella identified as one of his administration’s 10-point agenda.

“Even as we focus efforts on overcoming the pandemic that has severely impacted the local economy, we continue to pursue projects that address critical concerns in the city,” he said.
