Magazines, DVDs seized from book shop and theater

The Cebu City Anti-Indecency Board (CAIB) confiscated DVDs from vendors at the old Vision Theater in Colon Street and glossy magazines from a book shop in a mall in separate operations.

The Book Sale outlet in SM Cebu was warned that its business permit would be revoked if it continued to sell “sexually provocative” reading materials.

“We have warned them before,” said Cebu City Administrator Lucelle Mercado, who is also the chairperson of CAIB.

“If they are caught a third time, they will lose their permit.”

This is the second incident for the Book Sale outlet in the mall, after a similar operation in 2012.
Book Sale is a popular chain selling bargain-priced books and back issues of magazines of foreign and local titles.

Last June 30, CAIB representatives confiscated two copies of the book “Kama Sutra” and 235 copies of magazines – Cosmopolitan (186 copies), FHM (38 copies) and Maxim (11 copies).

The magazines, published in Metro Manila, were sold at P80 to P160.

CAIB also confiscated 931 DVDs from three stalls inside the old Vision Theater on Colon Street. The vendors fled the stalls before authorities arrived.

The confiscated DVDs included sex scandals, as well as local and foreign-produced pornographic films, according to the CAIB.

The seized magazines and DVDs were deposited for safekeeping and proper disposal at the City Hall consultants’ office.

The magazines will be shredded while the DVDs will be destroyed.

Mercado said the Cebu city government continues to operate against vendors of pornographic reading materials as part of their effort to protect public morals.
