MANDAUE CITY, Cebu – Firecracker manufacturers in Barangay Babag in Lapu-Lapu City received food aid from the city government after they agreed to heed Mayor Junard Chan’s request that they work in open spaces and away from their homes to prevent a repeat of a recent explosion that caused the death of a 13-year-old boy.

Nagiel Bañacia said that the food aid that includes 20 kilos of rice, sachets of milk and instant coffee, noodles, and canned goods were given as a “reward” to 32 families in Sitio Radar for their cooperation with City Hall.

The food aid will last for five days, said Bañacia, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

“Sayud si Mayor Ahong nga panginabuhi na kini sa mga tawo sulod sa pipila ka mga katuigan ug gibali wala lang sa mga tawo ang ka piligro sa trabaho mao nga daghan na ang na nga.angol ug napatay,” Bañacia said.

(Mayor Ahong is well aware that this has been their source of livelihood for years and that they disregard safety, the very reason why some of them get injured or even die [when explosions occur].)

The distribution of the food pack started on Saturday afternoon, December 12.
