MANDAUE CITY, Philippines – Phase 1 of the bike lane here is now 60 percent complete.

Lawyer John Eddu Ibañez, executive secretary of Mayor Jonas Cortes, said the City and the Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH-7) have already completed about 60 percent of the installation of bollards and concrete barriers on the areas that constitute the first phase of the city’s bike lane.

The planning, installation, and construction of the first phase started late last year yet.

Phase 1 covers Ouano Ave., A.C Cortes, Mantawi Drive, and part of JP Rizal St.

Ibañez said the concrete barriers and plastic bollards were installed in those areas as most of the vehicles that pass the area usually drive fast.

Ibañez said the second phase of the bike lane, would be the installation of bike racks, bicycle parking in public areas, bicycle repair stations, and paint markings in the interior areas.

Ibañez added this is in line with the implementation of the city’s Comprehensive Bike Ordinance that was passed by the council last December. It is also an answer to the national government’s call to strengthen the cities’ bike networks. /rcg
