JVR asked to head college

By: Gabriel C. Bonjoc July 23,2014 - 08:05 AM

A MANIFESTO with 500 signatures of students and faculty members of Talisay City College (TCC) called on Talisay City Mayor Johnny V. delos Reyes to assume the school’s presidency.

The mayor, who only finished two years of a mechanical engineering course, said he was surprised by the manifesto.

The constitution and by-laws of the college require the president to have a doctorate degree and occupy the position on a full-time basis.

The manifesto signed by faculty association president Enrique Peñaranda, alumni president Jasyer Abacajan and Supreme Student Government Mar Onell Booc, also called for a revamp of the school’s board of trustees.

The board chaired by delos Reyes recently appointed acting Talisay City Engineer Gamaliel Vicente Jr. as the acting school president.

Vicente is dean of the college of engineering and architecture in the University of the Visayas (UV) owned by the Gullas family.

The college has been without a clear president since last year following the resignations of Dr. Freddie Bernal, regional director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Dr. Joseph Sol Galleon and Dr. Ester Velasquez from the post.

Vicente has a doctorate in management and a master’s degree in Public Administration at the University of the Visayas.

Vicente said he would only receive his salary as Talisay assistant city engineer and forego his paycheck as college president.
