Medical personnel were made busier in this year’s IronMan.

According to Dr. Peter Mancao, a member of the medical team, a number of participants suffered from cramps and dehydration.

There were also accidents recorded, mostly involving spectators crossing the road as the bikers passed by.

Participant 2792 was taken to  Chong Hua Hospital after his bike crashed at the corner of  Palma St. and S. Osmeña road. He was on the lane bound for Lapu-Lapu City when a Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadet suddenly crossed the street.

Mancao said the racer will have to undergo surgery for the wounds on his face.

Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) operations chief Joy Tumulak said there were six related accidents recorded.

He said the lack of discipline among spectators could be blamed for the spike in accidents.

Instead of staying behind the cordon, some ROTC cadets and street children kept on criss-crossing the road, distracting racers that led to accidents.

Racer  690 hit another cyclist who slowed down to grab a bottle of water from a race crew.

In Lapu-Lapu City, acting chief of police  Armando Radoc said PO1 Mark Anthony Cabahug broke his arm after he tried to stop a female biker, who was going down the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, from overshooting.

The biker was saved from harm and went on with the race, but the  policeman was taken to the Mactan Doctors Hospital./ With USJ-R Intern Anie M. Paujana
