‘Taped baby’ nurses back on duty; PB defers act on CCTV proposal

THE two nurses who were accused of taping the mouth of a newborn confined in the neonatal care unit of the Cebu Puericulture Center and Maternity House Inc. (CPCMHI) are off the hook and have reported back to work yesterday.

Nurses Kamille Neri and Arianne Pacula are back, said Edith Rose Santos, president of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) – Cebu chapter.

The two were placed on indefinite leave after the controversy erupted last May.

The parents of baby Johannes have not yet filed cases in court against the hospital. The hospital claimed that the baby’s mother, Jasmine Badocdoc, had agreed to settle the case.

“We are pleased to know that the two nurses are back to work as the PNA looks after the best interest and welfare of its members. One of this is the right of employment,” Santos said.

When asked to comment on the development of the case, Badocdoc said: “I hope they can do their job better. What happened to baby Yohannes is a lesson everyone learnt.”

The Cebu Provincial Board meanwhile, deferred action on the proposed ordinance that would require hospitals to install closed-circuit TV cameras in neonatal care units, emergency rooms, and the facility’s entrance and exit points.

Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale expressed concern over the cost of installing a CCTV system especially in small birthing centers.

“We are trying to determine the cost of the CCTV cameras so that we can assess if this is feasible for small birthing centers in the province,” Vice Governor Magpale said in yesterday’s regular session.

PB Member Sun Shimura who filed the proposed ordinance said the fatal shooting of a doctor in a private hospital in Cebu City last month adds to the necessity and urgency of approving the law.

The proposed measure was referred back to the Committee on Health headed by PB Member Peter John Calderon. The PB will tackle the proposed measure in next week’s session.
