A 36-year-old woman was killed after she allegedly jumped from the Marcelo Fernan Bridge yesterday afternoon.

The woman was identified as Angeline Dimpas, a resident of barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City.

The victim was identified by her aunt, who said she had a nervous breakdown due to depression.

The aunt said they didn’t know what caused the depression that prompted the victim to stop her studies in Manila.

The aunt said she would usually follow her niece when she leaves home, but yesterday she lost track of her.

Andres Guit-Guit, an ice drop vendor, said she saw the victim standing on the bridge’s railings while holding on to a lamp post at 2 :15 p.m.

Guit-Guit said he was gripped with shock when she let go and jumped to her death.
The woman landed on the water feet first.

Antonio Mavera, 29, and Joventine Igonia, who were in a neighborhood store under the bridge, jumped to the water and attempted to rescue the victim who was already unconscious when brought to the shore.

Paramedics called in by residents rushed the victim to the Mandaue City Hospital where she was declared dead. “She may have survived if the ambulance arrived earlier,” Mavera said in Cebuano.

He added that the paramedics arrived half an hour after they were alerted of the incident.

Police said there were no signs of foul play in the woman’s death.

Mavera said he had witnessed several people jump from the bridge. He said they could not easily rescue bridge jumpers because of the unpredictable current.

“It would be better if we have life vests so we won’t fear for our safety when rescuing someone,” said Mavera.
