The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras bucked a slow start by finishing strong as they won their third straight game after beating the resilient University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 65-60, in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras played sluggish basketball in the first half and paid dearly for it as they fell behind by 10 early in the second period, 13-23. They continued to trail for the next two periods but flipped the switch in the fourth behind the aggressive play of former Far Eastern University Tamaraw guard Jovannie “John Lloyd” Luz, who scattered five points in an 11-2 run that spelled the difference in the tightly contested game.
Sanjo was the lone double-digit scorer for the Cobras with 15 points peppered with 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
Regalado had 19 points and six boards for the Jaguars who fell to 0-2 (win-loss) for the season.
In the other seniors game, the surprising Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats grabbed solo second place in the standings after they bashed the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 66-58.
In the juniors division, the reigning champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles routed the CIT-U Wildkittens, 78-58, for their second straight win while the UC Baby Webmasters recovered from their loss to the University of San Carlos the other day, by posting a 76-50 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers.
