Man kills 2-year-old son

A mentally disturbed man killed his two-year old son by allegedly slitting the child’s throat.

Roberto Ompad, 28 was having breakfast with his partner, around 6 a.m. today when he suddenly went into a fit of anger.

A neighbor Sheila Velasco said they heard the couple shouting at each other and later heard a baby cry. They didn’t mind, thinking it was just the couple quarreling. Out of fear, Alice Cañete, her partner, run out of their in sitio Zapanta, barangay Tejero, Cebu City, leaving behind their two-year-old son who was sleeping and five-year-old daughter. She was followed by her five-year-old daughter, with Ompad giving chase.

Moments later, they found the year-old-boy bloodied, with wounds in his neck. Neighbors and relatives rushed the baby to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.

“Wa pud dayon mi katabang sa bata, kay nahadlok mi nga mobalik ang amahan, kami napud nya pangdunggabon (We were not able to help the baby out of fear that the father would come back and would also attack us),” Velasco said.

The child was declared dead on arrival at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

SPO1 Victor Ayuman, CCPO, homicide section investigator said Ompad may be suffering from ‘nervous breakdown.’ He is now in police custody facing parricide case.

Velasco said Ompad had attempted to commit suicide twice.
